Sermon delivered February 1, 2009
Here we are in what is being called Kentucky's worst natural disaster ever -- ice has left hundreds of thousands of people stranded in their homes and without electricity. We were fortunate to have a wood stove and the means to quickly install it and heat our home. We found that the "hardship" actually brought our family together in the evenings, something that gets more difficult to do as the kids get older. Sometimes, I suppose, the most debilitating moments bring about the most precious gifts.
Last week we looked at the first three verses of Paul's letter to the Galatians. Today we'll see how the introduction closes. In those few opening remarks Paul explained the reason for the most debilitating moment for Jesus -- the cross. These brief explanations in the beginning are the basis for the rhetorical question he asks later in the letter, "Why the cross?" So, why the cross?
