Sermon delivered January 25, 2009
We have witnessed an historical moment last week as our nation swore in its first black president. The inaugural ceremonies ended January 21st with a prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral. Many religious leaders were asked to speak, and a female preacher delivered the message. The service included cherished hymns e.g. "Holy! Holy! Holy!" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," accompanied by prayers and responsive readings from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Hindu religious leaders.
The insinuation is clear -- so much so that "insinuation" is not the right word. The teaching is, all religions claim the same God, but by different names. Yahweh, Christ, Allah, Ishwar, Ishvara, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva -- they are all one. "I and the Father are One," said Jesus. "No one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." I wonder if those at the ceremony realized the absurdity in singing, "Holy! Holy! Holy!" when in reality they rejected its truth, "God in three Persons, Blessed Trinity!"
