“Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.
All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.”
Psalm 25:8-10
“God is so good, God is so good; God is so good, He’s so good to me.” I think most of you probably recognize these words to the simple chorus I remember learning when I was a young child. Even though it is one I have been singing for many years, it is one I never get tired of singing. Being a singer, songwriter, and worship leader, I am constantly racking my brain and examining Scripture for profound explanations and vivid images to describe the God we seek to worship. However, the older I get, the more depth I find in the seemingly simple expressions of the Lord.
When we use the word “good” (a word we use a lot in everyday conversations) to describe the Lord, I think it is often easy to just skim right over this word without giving it a bit of thought. Hopefully, you have been able to take some time this past week to give it a little more thought than usual. If not, take that time right now. I think it is crucial for us to do this in order to engage in abundant worship. It is only when we contemplate the goodness of the Lord and then realize how undeserving we are of this rich and beautiful goodness coming to us from the One who is Holy that we truly form a foundation of worship. We must guard against becoming apathetic to this goodness that is so graciously lavished on us. We cannot only meditate on the goodness of the Lord once or even a couple of times a year if we are to worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Praise the Lord for His love, mercy, and goodness!

When I think of where I’ve been, You take me back time and again; I’m forgiven.
All the heartache that I keep, still You hold me when I weep;
the grace that I receive, because You love me.
You have been so good, You are ever faithful to me.
Such blessings in my life, I ask myself if I ever thank You like I could?
In my darkest hour, love’s amazing power rescues me.
Oh, my Lord, let me say it like I should: You are ever faithful, You have been so good.
In the worst I have to bear, in a world that’s so unfair,
I come to You in prayer because You’re always there.
You have been so good, You are ever faithful to me.
Such blessings in my life, I ask myself if I ever thank You like I could?
In my darkest hour, love’s amazing power rescues me.
Oh, my Lord, let me say it like I should: You are ever faithful, You have been so good.
So, I will glory in the cross. If one more blessing never came to me,
Your sacrifice would still be enough, it is enough.
You have been, You have been so good, You are ever faithful to me.
Such blessings in my life, I ask myself if I ever thank You like I could?
In my darkest hour, love’s amazing power rescues me.
Oh, my Lord, let me say it like I should: You are ever faithful, You have been so good.
You are ever faithful, You have been so good, so good.
“You Have Been So Good” is written by Bob Farrell and David Hamilton. It is originally recorded by Sandi Patty on her album, “Take Hold of Christ.”
