A Mighty Fortress

E-mail Print PDF

“In you, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame;

in your righteousness deliver me!  Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily!

Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!  For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me;

you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge.

Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.”

Psalm 31:1-5

The Christian Life in the early sixteenth century was much different than it is now, especially in Germany.  There were not churches on every corner.  Everyone did not own five or more copies of the Bible.  The truth is, there was basically one church, the Catholic Church, and no one had the Bible in their own language.  People were forced to rely on the priests and other religious scholars to tell them what the Bible (at this time in Latin) said.  Unfortunately, profit was made off of this ignorance, and people were encouraged to pay for forgiveness of their sins or even pay to buy a dead relative out of purgatory.

As German monk and professor of theology Martin Luther continued studying the Word of God for his own, he became increasingly uncomfortable with these practices of the Catholic Church.  Luther wrote 95 statements against the church and nailed them to the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517.  This instance sparked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, a reformation which led to Protestant churches, including the Baptist church.

Luther went on to translate the Bible into the German language as well as publish many tracts, sermons, commentaries, and hymns.  His most famous hymn still sung today in churches across the globe is, A Mighty Fortress is Our God.   We will sing this song as part of worship service today, and you will hear a new take on this concept of Scripture from the pen of Christy Nockels.

- Brennan

Our God is, a consuming fire, A burning holy Flame, with glory and freedom;
Our God is, the only righteous judge, Ruling over us with kindness and wisdom.

We will keep our eyes on You, We will keep our eyes on You.

A mighty fortress is our God, A sacred refuge is Your Name;
Your Kingdom is unshakable, With You forever we will reign.

Our God is, jealous for His own, None could comprehend, His love and His mercy;
Our God is exalted on His throne, High above the heavens, Forever He’s worthy...
We will keep our eyes on You, We will keep our eyes on You.

A mighty fortress is our God, A sacred refuge is Your Name;
Your Kingdom is unshakable, With You forever we will reign.

We will keep our eyes on You, We will keep our eyes on You;
So we can set our hearts on You, Lord we will set our hearts on You!

A mighty fortress is our God, A sacred refuge is Your Name;
Your Kingdom is unshakable, With You forever we will reign.

A mighty fortress is our God, A sacred refuge is Your Name;
Your Kingdom is unshakable, With You forever we will reign.

With You forever we will reign, With You forever we will reign.

 Our God is, a consuming fire, A burning holy Flame, with glory and freedom.

The Bible Says:

Thus I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.  And they did so.  (Exodus 14:4, NASB)
