My Verdict

E-mail Print PDF

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men,

the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all,

which is the testimony given at the proper time.”

1 Timothy 2:5-6

Once in a while, a song comes along which is so powerfully moving, it leaves me speechless.  It doesn’t happen often, but this was the case with the song, “Not Guilty,” by Mandisa off of her latest album, Freedom.  It vividly depicts an unpopular characteristic of God.  We often jump right to “God is love,” but if we are to truly understand the love of God, we must first revere Him as this unpopular title: Judge.  We can only begin to comprehend God as love when we recognize Him as Judge.

Several passages throughout Scripture bring to light this great truth (Romans 2:12-16 & 1 Corinthians 4:3-4 are some).  Why is God Judge?  The answer is simple: He is holy.  We will spend a great deal of time in our worship service this morning dwelling on these things: God as Holy and God as Judge.  Please spend some time reading these lyrics below and passages of Scripture mentioned to prepare your heart for corporate worship.

- Brennan

I stand accused: there’s a list a mile long of all my sins,

of everything that I’ve done wrong.

I’m so ashamed; there’s nowhere left for me to hide.

This is the day I must answer for my life.

My fate is in the Judge’s hands, but then He turns to me and says,

“I know you, I love you.  I gave my life to save you.

Love paid the price for mercy.  My verdict: not guilty.”

How can it be?  I can’t begin to comprehend

what kind of grace would take the place for all my sin.

I stand in awe now that I have been set free.

And the tears well up as I look at that cross, ‘cause it should have been me.

My fate was in the nail-scarred hands.  He stretched the out for me and said,

“I know you, I love you.  I gave my life to save you.

Love paid the price for mercy.  My verdict: not guilty.”

I’m falling on my knees to thank You.

With everything I am, I praise You;

So grateful for the words I heard You say:

“I know you, I love you.  I gave my life!

I know you, I love you.  I gave my life to save you.

Love paid the price for mercy.  My verdict: not guilty.

Love paid the price for mercy.  My verdict: not guilty.  Not guilty.”

The Bible Says:

The LORD said to Moses, "When you go back to Egypt see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your power; but I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go."  (Exodus 4:21, NASB)
